Who ARE these people?, part 1

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Here are two clips from the first filmed trip to N. Dakota, by Walt and family, approx. 1942. The first must be of a Nelson boy(?) with Lois, then Irene and sisters, and ends with some good old-fashioned family fun.

The other clip has two or three other families – I have no clue who.

I think I recognize the school building (Squaw Gap?) from the still photo below, and the nearby badlands also look familiar. The still was taken at the time of Grandpa’s funeral in Skaar, 1969. It was just months before Lovell died, & is probably the last picture of the five brothers together.

So, if you recognize the folks in the videos, especially the second one, please chime in. Lots more of these ND folks awaiting recognition.

More of Walt’s movies

From approx. 1948, Myrna, Marcia, Irene and her parents (I think), Kenny and George in parade costume, etc.

Then about 1956-57, Walt, Marcia, Myrna, Lois, Kenny. Cut to the only picture I know of, of Grandpa Larson with a big grin on his face, followed by some more showing-off by George, with Ron, Marcia, and Ivan in the background. Never let it be said that I only embarrass others with these clips, and spare myself!

Coming next: some more identity questions. Sharpen your memories, cousins.

Tracing Helene

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I ran into a few complications as as I was tracing Helene Olsdatter back into Norway. Things were going pretty smoothly until Helene failed to show up with her family in the 1865 census listing.

District no. School distr. Local parish Parish Farm
758 9 Bødalens Nykirkens Gausdals Bradtland*
Given name Last name Family pos. Occupation Marital status Age Sex Birth place
Ole Johansen Husmd. med Jord g 46 m Gausdal

Matea Olsdatter Deres Datter ug 18 k Gausdal
Eli Olsdatter Deres Datter ug 8 k Gausdal
Oline Olsdatter Deres Datter ug 5 k Gausdal
Anton Olsen Deres Søn ug 1 m Gausdal

I searched the churchbooks, and found birth records for all four of the children listed above. Although the farm name (residential surname) changed several times, indicating the family moved from farm to farm more often than most, the witnesses were from the same two or three farms, in some cases the same individuals. There was no doubt I was following the same family as the one in Helene’s birth record.

Then I discovered that the 1865 census, unlike 1801, grouped each family on the same farm separately, so there were 8 listings for the Bradtland farm (there definitely were not 8 different farms by that name). And, lo and behold, there was Helene (I hadn’t found her earlier because here, her name is spelled slightly differently).

Well, at least I found her. But according to this, she was living as a foster child with another family, while her four siblings, both older and younger, lived with their parents. Yet another intriguing but surely untraceable story. More fiction, anyone?

Helene Olsdatter

Friday, April 17th, 2009

And now a break from the old movies, to amuse ourselves with a little genealogy. I have been studying Helene Olsdatter, Ole Larson’s second wife. She is not a direct ancestor of mine or my first cousins, but is the mother of Oscar and Olaf Larson, and of Paula (“Aunt Polly”) Larson Sletten, Manda Larson Lunde, and Herman Larson. In addition, Helene’s eldest daughter Alma Larson Raiten, is one of the most prolific of all, with eight children and a total of nine pages of descendants in the “Larsons and Slettens” book.

There was very little background on Helene in “Larsons and Slettens.” She was said to be a midwife and herbalist. Aunt Polly was quoted as saying she “came over on the same boat with the Slettens.” Cousin Mary Lentine has asked her mother, cousin Clarice, for some further information on Helene’s immigration and early life in America, which I will post as soon as I receive it.

I was able to reach quite far into the past using the churchbooks and other online resources from Norway. Aline gave Helene’s birth date as 11 Oct. 1855, and her parents’ names as Ole Lien and Anna Hansdatter. That was enough to get me started, and I located her birth record (actual date 11 Oct. 1854), in Gausdal parish:

(year 1854) (born) Oct. 11, (baptized) Oct. 29, Helene; (Parents): Inderst* Ole Johansen Brettingen (and wife) Anne Hansdatter. (Witnesses): Engebregt Hansen Børø _ ningen (and wife)) —? Marthe Simonsdatter Bratland, Marthe af Christen Christensdatter, and Nils Hansen Rud-Bølien.

*”Inderst” is an indication of status or occupation; my Norwegian chatroom friends had a hard time translating it. One thought it was some kind of servant, but others said it indicated a person staying at a home that is not their permanent residence. At any rate, I found that Ole and Anne moved around a lot, which complicated my work. I may expand on that in another post. For now, I am able to report with good confidence Helene’s pedigree for three prior generations.
helena-pedSince this is another whole branch of the family, I will put up a new page for it in the Generations section. More info to follow as it develops.

Easter Greetings

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Easter has been a big occasion in our family. In addition to the religious significance, it was a time to dress up, hunt for eggs and candy, and celebrate as a family. First, a clip from Uncle Walt of Easter 1943, starring Lois, Kenny, and Irene. I’m not sure if the “shoe” part was from Easter, but I think it was. Note the sincere appreciation of gifts that were not toys or candy:

Then from Reatha, 1950, a sugar-fest featuring Kenny, Myrna, Marcia, and George. Also Darlene, her friend Colleen (? I think), and Kathy & Karen Amundson(?):

Finally, 1955-56 with Reatha, Lovell, George, Bonnie and Patty. I’m not sure if the “bite-the-ducky” portion is from Easter, but it was too cute to leave out. The “dump-the-eggs” moment is another of my favorites:

If I have mis-identified anyone, please let me know. A blessed season to all.

Earliest Home Movies

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Up until very recently, my parents’ home movies were the earliest I had seen. That was until I got the DVD disk from Cousin Myrna. So, sue her, not me, if any of these put you over the edge as one of the stars. Uncle Walt was on the job as videographer by approx. 1942. In the earliest scenes: Lois, Kenny, and Darlene:

Next, Darlene & Duke the dog on July 4, and Kenny et. al. in Autumn Leaves:

Finally, Irene with birthday cake (?-don’t know whose; Lois’ 6th is coming later); Lois & Ken’s tea party, and some men smelting on the Cowlitz River. I think the one in the hat is my Dad(Lovell), age about 27. Enjoy.

Anne Samuelsdatter’s Immigration

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

I found Anne Samuelsdatter on a passenger list at Norway Heritage. I am accepting that it is the right one because a) the age and parish is correct, and b) another passenger is from the Bjerke farm, Anne’s birthplace. Note, however, that Anne’s parents are not on the list, nor are any of her siblings. It is not yet clear whether Anne’s parents came to America, but it is known that at least one brother, Ole Samuelsen, must have, as he has descendants here. I am trying to contact the descendants, but so far have not been successful. The three names listed in this excerpt are the only passengers from Øyer (Øie) parish. Please excuse the funky appearance of the pasted-in table.

Anne did have a brother named Johan, and I was hoping this might be him, but the brother was born in 1855, so would have been only 12 at the time of this sailing. As for Ole Samuelsen, he was born in 1864, so would have been only 3 years old at this time. Ole must have come to America later; maybe the parents did too. Stay tuned for more discoveries.

1949-1950

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Here are some movie clips from 1949-50. First, a family reunion at 4316 Pacific Way, 1950. Featured are Isaac, all five sons, plus Aunt Irene and her sister Vera (? – help me out on this, cousins), and some horseplay by Darlene, Lois, Kenny and Myrna. I inadvertently left the sound on this one – mostly just noise, sorry.

Some of you remember how my Mom loved to make costumes and dress up the kids. Parades were a cherished opportunity. Here are a couple of examples from 1949-1950 featuring me, Kenny, Myrna, Marcia, and some other kids, all outfitted by Reatha.
