Tracing the Slettens

Tracing the Slettens. Started with no patronym for Gunder, Engebret, Mathea, Ole, Edward. Did have precise birth dates for Gunder and Engebret. Guessed Olsen and turned out correct. All records are from Ringebu parish. Olsen was later confirmed by Aline and Clarice, and by the gravestone of father “Ole E. Sletten” at Brush Creek. No trace of the surname Sletten. There is such a farm in Ringebu, but I haven’t seen it in any of these family records, except possibly as a witness’ residence. Deciphering the handwriting is also an inexact science.

  1. Jacky Sletten says:

Hi, My name is Jacky Sletten and I am in the process of tracing back my ancestors. I am not sure if we are related, but here are some details:

My father is Lyle Sletten, son of Robert Sletten. Robert is the son of Clarence M. Sletten and Amanda Rogness (both from Iowa). Clarence is the son of Martin. O. Sletten and Martha Larson (Martha was born in 1871 in Highlandville, Winneshiek, Iowa). From what I can find, Martha’s parents are Marta Knutsdatter Draugsvoll (was born in 1830 in Vossestrand, Hordaland, Norway) and Mikkjel Larson Bratthole (born on 15 Dec 1831 in Vossestrand, Hordaland, Norway).

Do any of these names ring a bell? My search brought me to your website, so I am hopeful. If not, I thank you for your time and I am impressed with how much and how far you have been able to research your family’s history.

    Best regards,

    Jacky Sletten

  2. George says:

Hi, Jackie, and thank you for visiting my site. I am afraid that the names and places of your ancestors do not match any of the information I have. The Slettens who so extensively married into “my” Larsons came from Gudbrandsdal, Oppland, in the 1880′s, and settled in Wisconsin, where the Larsons were already established. I don’t know of any Iowa connections, although eastern Iowa is just across the Mississippi from western Wisconsin.

The surname is quite interesting. I cannot find any farms with that name, although some farms, or parts of farms, have it as a suffix. Google translate says it means “plain,” as in (I think) “flat land,” along the lines of haugen, which means “pasture,” or “small hill,” and was also used as a surname by immigrants. I believe that many of these surnames were taken on by immigrants only when they arrived in America.

I will forward your question to some of my Sletten cousins, who may have more information.

  3. Ole says:

Hi. I am tracing some descendants of Ole Ellefsen Sletten and is wifte Ingeborg Eriksdatter born & christened 15 Jan. 1832. Øyer, Oppland, Norway.

They had a grandson, Ole Edvardsen Bergum, (named Ole Sletten in the US) married to Mathea Torgersdatter Olstadøverjordet. Ole came to US in april or june 1903, and Marthea and their 3 children came to the US in sep/oct 1903.

Ole probably died between 1909-1912, as he his not mentioned in the US Census 1910, and Mathea remarried in 1912 to Bendick Hanson.
I am interesting in descendants of Ole and Mathea Sletten

Hei! I think I can help you. I am emailing you a password to the “descendants” pages, where you will find a lot of information on those folks.
