“Belongs to me, Marit Larsdatter Skurdalsbrenden. I was born September 1837 and was confirmed in South Fron church the 13th of June 1851. Emigrated from my old home the 18th of April 1865 and came here to Coon Prairie the 8th of July same year, 1865.” Read more …

To say Marit’s life was difficult would be an understatement. She was born in the midst of a multi-year famine. People were grinding up birch bark and moss to make bread. When she was three, her mother was sent to prison for stealing food, and it was in prison her youngest sibling, brother Ole, was born. She came to America with her family, married here, but died upon the birth of her third child.
