No close family anniversaries. On this date in 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte abdicated the throne and fled to the island of Elba. Only two years earlier, his empire included most of Europe. The painting above, by Adolph Northen, depicts Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow the previous year, at the close of his disastrous Russian campaign.
