Exactly ten years after the Litches were married, on 11 November 1918, at Compiègne, France, an armistice was signed, ending hostilities on the Western Front in World War One. Although fighting continued in other areas, the occasion was heralded as the effective end of the long, brutal war. Celebrations erupted throughout the Allied countries, and the date became a national holiday for many.

Later, in America and elsewhere, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans’ Day, to honor the country’s veterans of all armed conflicts.
