Born in Sør-Fron, Norway, on this date in 1829: great-great grandfather Amund Amundsen Volden, also featured on his death date, 2 May. His birth was “out of wedlock,” which must have been difficult growing up, both from the standpoint of poverty and stigmatization. Amund was one of the early immigrants to the Coon Prairie settlement in Wisconsin, arriving in 1857. His daughter Marie, our great-grandmother on the Moen side, was born the following year, the only one of my father’s grandparents to be born in America.
