And in Paris in 1740: Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade — aristocrat, revolutionary politician, philosopher and writer, most famous as an avid proponent of sexual debauchery, from whose name comes the term “sadism.” For his efforts, Sade spent 32 of his 74 years in various prisons and insane asylums, including ten years in the infamous Bastille.
