Ole Larson's Folks

No close family anniversaries. Born in Romania on this date in 1909: Johnny Weissmuller, swimmer, movie star, and pin-up boy of the 1930s-40s. Top photo shows him in his most famous role — Tarzan.

And in Paris in 1740: Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade —  aristocrat, revolutionary politician, philosopher and writer, most famous as an avid proponent of sexual debauchery, from whose name comes the term “sadism.” For his efforts, Sade spent 32 of his 74 years in various prisons and insane asylums, including ten years in the infamous Bastille. Depicted below in an imaginatory portrait by H. Biberstein, 1919.
