No close family anniversaries, although there is a war story with connection to the family. On this date in 1945, the U.S. 10th Army overcame the last major pockets of Japanese resistance on Okinawa Island, ending one of the bloodiest battles of World War II. Possession of Okinawa gave the United States a base large enough for an invasion of the Japanese home islands.
