No close family anniversaries. Born in Meigs County, Ohio, on this date in 1842: author Ambrose Bierce. Writing in a style ahead of its time, Bierce influenced later generations of writers such as Stephen Crane. His best known story, “Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” was called by Kurt Vonnegut, “the greatest Ameriucan short story.”
