  Family oral history indicates that Ludwig and family emmigrated from Hassloch, in Hesse-Darmstadt, present-day Germany, embarking from Glasgow, Scotland on the ship "Thistle." (Ship name and date corroborated by gravestone inscription). "Dunkard" was a branch of the Mennonites, also known as Anabaptists or German Baptists. "Von der Schweiz" (from Switzerland) appears not only on Ludwig's gravestone, but in his christening record and those of his siblings in Hassloch, Germany, where he was (probably) baptized in 1705 as Johann Ludwig Mohler (per Mohler Genealogy source). If correct birth date is 1696, Ludwig may have been born before or after his parents fled Switzerland to Hesse-Darmstadt.
