• Notes

  The book, "Pioneer Life ..." gives no dates, and details are problematic, especially the dates given in unsourced online trees. Gabriel's father, not named, was a British soldier in the American Revolution. His mother died "shortly after his birth, and just before the close of the war." Gabriel was placed with a foster family (also not named). The father sailed for Ireland with the troops, and was "never heard of again." It is unclear whether Sprung was the surname of the biological or foster father. If Gabriel was born shortly before 1783, at least after 1780, the dates (also from unsourced trees) of his marriage (1787) and David Sprung's birth (1796) are too early. Online trees give Gabriel's birth as 1767, almost a decade before the Revolution began. This fits with the other unsourced dates, but contradicts the book's narrative.
